Pregnancy and Food

Yes, for those of you who have begun to wonder. I am still alive. I haven’t forgotten my homemaking blog; abandoned it temporarily, but not forgotten it. But for those of you who have ever been pregnant and experienced the gloriously trying nausea and energy loss, you can understand why I haven’t wanted to write about food these past few weeks. I was on such a role, writing several times a week, even concocting my own recipes! And then overnight, nothing. The cause? I’m pregnant. 11 weeks, and counting the days until I’m in my second trimester where I know I will be able to live and feel human again. This season is a challenging one, I never really look forward to that first trimester of pregnancy and yet we have to endure it if we want a baby out of it :)

What does one do? How do I plan, prepare, shop, and serve my family when I’m pregnant and the last thing I want to do is plan, prepare, think, food?! Like I said, it’s a challenging season. I don’t think I have all the answers. I think the thing that has helped me the most is giving myself a goal to look forward to. I know that from the time I discover I am pregnant, I have about 6 or 7 weeks before I’m going to be feeling good again. Then I take it one day at a time. After I’ve gotten a week behind me I look at that week and ask myself, “Can you do that again?!” Of course I can! I give myself breaks, I allow my house to get messy when I need to rest. I don’t force myself to do the dishes as often because sometimes I just need to sit and watch a movie with the kids. And I think the most important thing to remember, I’m going to have another little baby. This baby is going to be an incredibly important part of this family, and I will sacrifice my time, energy, and comfort to have the honor of bringing this child into the world.

Well, I’m almost there. I’ve already started to feeling better. I’m not nearly as sick unless I go too long between meals. I’m starting slightly to get my energy back (just the fact that I am doing the post says a lot!) And today I branched out and made up a new dish for the family for dinner. I added hamburger, onion and Italian seasonings to my fried potatoes, they turned out delicious! I think I better stop here. It’s about time for me to hit the hay! Goodnight!

  1. Ah – the first trimester! I have instant recall of that tired, nauseas feeling to this day, bleugh! If it wasn’t for the fact that nine months of gestation produces a little gift of such wonder and blessing, I’d be tempted not to bother!!
Well, not long to go now, just keep drinking water and eating plain pretzels, that’s what helped me…

  2. Congratulations on your pregnancy! I always love to hear of babies coming into the world!

When I’m pregnant I’m usually couch bound most of it, so my husband and recently my children learned to cook. They rolled up their sleeves when it was mealtime.

Never feel guilty for resting! Bringing a baby into the world uses lots of your resources and energy. Good luck! ;)

I had morning sickness with my first 2 boys but with my third boy my hubby had it! lol seriously! I kinda felt sorry for him, but at the same time it was so nice to be pregnant and not have the toilet for my best friend for 8 weeks!

  4. Congratulations on your pregnancy! I just found your journal and have already listened to one of your podcasts. (gardening one) I really enjoyed it. Keep taking care of yourself!
