Garden Planning, it’s that time of the year again!

It’s almost February, do you know what that means? For those of us who have a garden, and for those of us who want one, it’s time. Time to start planning, reading, designing, even starting some seeds indoors if you are going to be doing that this year! I thought I would share with you a couple of the books that I’ve gleaned a lot of inspiration from. Gardening is not something that comes naturally to everyone, and some of us (even those of us who’ve spent a lot of time gardening when we were growing up) can use some extra help from people who have been successful.

I love gardening books, if you are wanting to start small this year with a couple of raised beds I would really suggest the book, “All New Square Foot Gardening”, it was the inspiration of my square foot gardens a few years back, it was simple and easy to flip through and gain some knowledge about how to get started. Very easy read!

This next book is great too, “Carrots Love Tomatoes” is a book about what plants like to be planted together, and which to keep apart from each other, it also give a little info on each of the plants mentioned and is a helpful resource for the gardener.

And for the more advanced gardener, or the family who is wanting to turn their whole yard and maybe even their house into a living breathing garden that feeds you and the rest of the neighborhood the whole year through, this next book is for you! “Gaia’s Garden” is a great resource for the gardener who wants to turn their yard into a food forest that eventually will take care of itself, this is our long term goal and I’ve learned so much from this book. It’s inspirational and somehow takes the fright out of tackling such a huge project! One step at a time.

Three great resources, I hope this helps you in your endeavors to growing some food for your family this coming year! Life is full of many changing seasons. I’m hoping to revamp my garden this year. We had to kind of tear up our garden to get my mom’s house moved in so I’m not sure what will happen with our garden this year, we are also having a baby in June so I may have to push my garden out another year, but it’s always in the back of my mind, I look forward to the day when I’m providing a good amount of food for our family from our garden, but like everything that is worth while, it takes time and effort! Happy Gardening!

Square Foot Gardening

This isn’t the best picture nor did my garden do the best that year :) But you can see, some of the sections are planted and some aren’t, because I was spacing things out, I had planted some rows of carrots (the kids eat a lot of carrots) and was waiting a couple weeks to plant some more :) Also, something I’m going to change when we do an overhaul on our garden plans; I made really wide spaces (I think about 5-6 ft) between garden boxes, so that I could mow between the boxes with our riding lawn mower. Next time I will make the boxes a lot closer together and just use the weed eater or plant a low lying ground cover between the rows. As soon as I can get the other photo to upload I will show you what I mean. :) The wide spaces seem like wasted space to me, and mowing with a rider between the rows actually just spreads weed seeds (I guess so would the weed eater). Ground cloth over the pathways, or planting a ground cover would be a better plan. Hope that helps! And we have chickens, a fence around the whole garden will be nice too!

Summer’s Over-Already?!

Hey wait a minute, I thought summer was just getting going? Don’t we still have another month or two? It’s September I know, but my garden is still wanting more sun. Last week we had a LOT of rain and wind and colder weather and I went out the other day to check on my garden (between the heavy rains) and was sad to see that my one tomato plant that was in full bloom and bearing a lot of fruit, was completely dead. It’s still got a little bit of fruit that I can pick this weekend but that will be it. So sad, but I got my money’s worth for sure, and was able to bless a few families with the fruit as well.

Ripening pumpkins

Here are my pumpkins, I’m hoping that we get a little more sun to make sure they can mature and ripen. They are so pretty even if they don’t ripen :)  There are rumors that we will have an Indian Summer but after these two weeks of tons of rain, I will believe it when I see it!

Corn!

And we have tons of corn!  I don’t know if they will continue to ripen if we don’t get more sunshine, I will have to see. It’s been a hard year for a successful garden, a late start and an early end. But it’s been a learning experience and I will definitely do it again next year with a year of successful gardening under my belt.

Green Pumpkins

So let the fall come, I actually really look forward to the fall season it means that our baby is coming soon. I especially love apple season, I will forever have the emotionally charged memory of the smell of cooking apple butter filling the house connected with the labor and birth of our sweet Eamon. Who knows, maybe the week I’m expecting this new one I will get up the energy to make a bunch of applesauce. I also love all the changes that fall brings, the colorful changing leaves, the harvest season, pumpkins and pumpkin pie, and all the lovely warm soups and hearty meals I find myself preparing for our family. Good times.

Gardening with Kids

Taste Testers, Itallian Kale

Here are the cutest taste testers! The kids were so cute, running around tasting all the different leaves. The lettuces, the kale, the beet and kohlrabi greens, Aidan even picked some dandelion leaves from the grass! It’s funny because if I had put all those greens on the table, they wouldn’t have eaten them, but picking them for themselves, it all tasted wonderful to them!

Yum!

Here’s baby Cait, she found some beet greens and was shoving them in her mouth. What a cute little girl!

Guenna tending her garden

Look at our corn, hasn’t it grown?! Here’s Guenna, taking care of the corn :)

Golden and red beetsGetting ready to pick!

Golden and red beets, I discovered why the beets were so pale after I cooked them, they are not red all the way through. They have red and white stripes and almost look like large radishes, if they didn’t taste like beets I would have thought them to be radishes! The golden beets had a lovely yellow/orange color when cooked. The kohlrabi was delicious! Brings back great memories of eating kohlrabi at my Grandma and Grandpa Nash’s house when I was a child. :)

Lucious Cherry TomatoesLeaf Lettuce, Romaine Lettuce

Here are my sweet little yellow cherry tomatoes, they are doing really well and there are tons of tomatoes on this particular plant. The plant right next to it doesn’t seem to be doing as well, I have yet to see anything other than flowers, we’ll have to wait and see. The lettuce has done really well, we had several yummy salads and have shared some with the ladies at church.

CarrotsCarrot Leaves, are the edible? :)

The carrots are doing well, we have several little boxes of them and I started some a few weeks after these so they will last us a little longer. And here you can see that Cait is trying out the carrot greens :)

I think this pumpkin is ripe...Cilantro, gone to seed

My pumpkins are doing really well, here Cait thinks that one is ready for picking :) And the picture to the right is my cilantro gone to seed. I’m hoping to harvest some seed, as you can see I will have plenty if my little experiment works!

Yellow Cucumber PlantLook how tall the corn is!

My yellow cucumber plant on the left, doing really well. Behind it is a brocoli plant, I wish I had planted more of, oh well, next year :) I didn’t know how big it ( the cucumber plant) would get so I only had one plant. Next year I will plant more because we love cucumbers, I think I will plant a whole box of them. They had quite a struggle at the get go and I lost one of my starts due to the cold weather and consistent heavy rains when I first planted, but this plant recovered and we are finally getting those cute yellow lemon cucumbers. Yum! And aren’t those kids just the cutest? :)

Itallian KaleCurly Kale

I planted two types of kale this year. The one on the left is an Italian kale with a nice flavor, the variation to the right is called curly kale and is the kind you can usually find in the stores. I think I prefer the Italian, it’s got a little less bite to it. Both are good though, and the kids love eating them both raw right off the plant!

Well, that’s it for now. Just doing a little catching up on the garden. We have really had fun as a family, watching our garden grow. Aidan told me the other day that he thinks we should plant some stuff in their dirt pile so they would have some stuff to eat while they are playing in the dirt. Somehow I have a feeling though that it just wouldn’t do that well! :)

Home grown beets

Our first beets of the season

A couple nights ago we got to enjoy the first beets from our garden. Aren’t they beautiful?! This is the first time I’ve planted a real garden (something other than just potted plants), and so far I’ve been very pleased with the results. Even though we got a late start because of the weather, the garden is doing really well and we are starting to reap the harvest. More than anything, it’s been really fun having a garden for the kids, they have learned so much and have had lots of fun planting seeds, helping weed, and helping water the plants, and now helping harvest the plants. Well worth all the efforts!

Guenna's beetsBeet boy

I steamed the beets and then chopped them up (I wore gloves because the beets were so hot), then added butter, salt and pepper and they were delicious! I steamed them so much of the color leached out of the beets, but they still had lots of flavor. I’m anxious to try them again a different way. Probably more next week, I need to let the remaining beets grow some more.

Any suggestions on cooking beets? I know my mom’s should both have at least one or two. I can’t really do beet salad, can’t do the vinegar, so I have to stick to mild recipes.  Specifically, how do you keep the beets from losing their color when you cook them? I steamed them in a veggie steamer, but I’m thinking that much of the color drained into the pot below? Maybe they aren’t ripe yet? Do they get more color the longer they stay in the ground? Anybody know anything about beets? :) As you can see, I’m still a learning gardener!

Planting our Square Foot Garden

Patting down the dirt

We finally did it, we got most of our garden planted, some of the boxes we will wait to plant as we go so that they wont all be ready at the same time. But we got a little of everything planted, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, basil, cilantro, cauliflower, romaine, mixed salads, orange/red beets, kohlrabi, celery, yellow/pickling cucumbers, pumpkins, corn, and potatoes. I have a couple more things that I would like to plant and I will continue to plant through the summer. And hopefully plant some winter crops this fall. It’s been such a fun adventure, I’m learning so much and have so much more to learn!

Raised Bed Gardening Podcast – Where Do I Start?

I am excited to announce my first podcast on The Joy of Homemaking!

A little history on the podcast. In the 6 years my husband and I have been married, each year I have attempted some sort of garden (in planters or buckets of some sort), all of which have failed. This year I am going to attempt raised bed gardening. Even though I grew up on a small farm I have realized that I don’t have as much knowledge about gardening as I would like to think I had. In an effort to raise a successful crop this year I decided to call in the troops, my friend Karen Engstrom who is an experienced mother of seven and gardener, has let me interview her. Thank you so much for you time Karen, all that you had to share was very helpful! Continue reading
